A state of instability currently prevails in the Tollywood industry. On one hand, there is a lack of work, and on the other, the threat of "Ban Culture" or boycotts--collectively, these factors have left technicians in a miserable condition. In this situation, Tollywood superstar and MP Dev has taken a significant initiative for technicians by facilitating the state government's 'Swasthya Sathi' scheme.
'Swasthya Sathi' Cards and Dev's Initiative
Dev stated that the health insurance of many technicians had been canceled, which became a major cause of anxiety for them. He wrote a letter to Honorable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding this issue. The Chief Minister responded promptly and organized a special health camp for the technicians. According to Dev, while affluent individuals like Swarup Biswas might not need this card, this 5-lakh rupee insurance is vital for ordinary technicians who live hand-to-mouth.
Criticism of 'Ban Culture' and the Atmosphere of Fear
In the video, Dev explicitly opposed the current "Ban Culture" or the practice of suspending individuals from work. He noted:
Atmosphere of Fear: Many technicians informed him that they were being threatened with a "ban" or expulsion from work if they attended Dev's health camp.
Who is actually being banned?: Dev cited an example, saying that if a director or actor (like Anirban Bhattacharya) is banned, the individual doesn't actually suffer much. Instead, thousands of ordinary technicians associated with that project lose their livelihoods. In essence, while trying to stop one person, the bread and butter of thousands are being snatched away.
The Current Crisis in the Industry
Dev mentioned that the volume of work in Tollywood has decreased significantly. Where there used to be numerous serials and movies, the numbers are now very limited. In this climate, finding new producers is becoming difficult. If threats or restrictive conditions continue to be imposed on technicians, the industry will face further losses.
Gratitude to the Chief Minister
Dev thanked the Chief Minister, stating that despite her busy schedule, she took swift action in the interest of the technicians. Dev has requested an extension of the health camp by a few more days so that technicians currently busy with shootings can also avail themselves of this benefit.
Conclusion
Dev clarified in his speech that he is not fighting a personal battle; rather, his goal is to ensure a healthy and fearless working environment for the technicians. He believes it is more important to think about the common workers than to show off "bossism" while sitting in an air-conditioned room.
